Michael has been De Marco Lawyer’s inaugural Managing Partner since the merger of his previous law firm, Judicate Lawyers, in December 2018. He is well recognised in the legal profession, and has led the firm through the COVID years of disruption into a period of successful growth.
Michael, as Director and Managing Principal of De Marco Lawyers, is responsible for developing and driving the firm’s strategy, leading the firm’s principals and senior staff, managing the firm’s relationships with its stakeholders like employees, service providers and the wider community, and representing the firm to key clients. He is the quintessential legal closer and problem solver and is renowned as a lawyer for his skills in resolving otherwise intractable disputes with a mixture of experience, hard work, dedication, fairness and wisdom. He is widely recognised as a lawyer who is capable of taking on tough cases where clients have otherwise lost hope and still achieving beneficial, cost effective, outcomes.
Michael is admitted as a Solicitor and/or as a Barrister to the Supreme Courts of Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland; all Australian Federal Courts, and to the High Court of New Zealand. He practises in all those jurisdictions.
Michael is not only a Barrister and Solicitor, but is also a Chartered Loss Adjuster, Building Consultant and Insurance Risk Manager. These professional roles have given him great experience, breadth and depth of expertise, and a solutions-driven approach based upon practical wisdom which clients find invaluable.
Michael is supervising the firm’s focus on innovation and is restructuring practice teams that will guide future expansion in the competitive market for legal services.

- Commenced practicing law in 1979.
- Was made what is now an international law firm’s youngest partner.
- Worked on secondment as senior advisor to the Commonwealth Attorney-General, Senator Gareth Evans, KC, in law reform areas such as personal and business taxation/trade practices/ insurance/consumer protection.
- Attended Harvard Law School’s Program of Instruction for Lawyers.
- Became a graded arbitrator and sat as a commercial arbitrator.
- Became a Foundation Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
- Established and managed a construction company, became a Registered Building Practitioner and successfully built houses, units, flats and town houses.
- Founding member of EERAG – East Essendon Rate Payers’ Action Group – led delegations to State and Local Government and arranged demonstrations to obtain compensation and benefits for neighbourhoods suffering disruption from instrumentalities.
- Was made Chairman of the Tribunal then hearing disputes over domestic statutory warranty insurance.
- Practised as a registered migration agent (No. 0104863) and now heads De Marco Lawyers’ Migration Law Team.
- Was the Victorian Division Chairman of the Australasian Institute of Chartered Loss Adjusters and Director of the international organisation representing loss adjusters in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
- Honorary lawyer for WTQA (Wushu T’ai Chi & Qigong Australia) regarding membership structures, member discipline, overseeing regulation of practice weapons, taxation status and accreditation of competition judges.

Celebrating his 20th year at DML, Chris Bailey has developed a passion for assisting clients through the often worrying process of preparing Wills and Powers of Attorney to assist both them and their families when issues occur.
Chris’s role extends to other general Litigation matters.
Chris will always provide optimum advice when it comes to drafting your documents. He will walk you through the process clearly and effectively.
In 2019, Chris’ efforts and expertise were recognised in these areas in becoming a Senior Associate at De Marco Lawyers. More recently Chris has been acknowledged as Special Counsel and Wills Lead, his role extends to mentoring and assisting the young lawyers as they progress through the firm.
An avid Melbourne Football Club fan, Chris was rapt when they finally broke through for a premiership in 2021 and has proven his overall interest in AFL by taking the trophy for AFL tipping competition in 2023.

Khadija's interest in international law was further solidified during her professional elective at university, where she authored a comprehensive essay on the effectiveness of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in combating femicide in Turkey. This important work received recognition when it was cited by the European Parliament in their report, "Preventing, Protecting, Providing Access to Justice: How Can States Respond to Femicide?" Khadija views this moment as a pivotal achievement in her career, reflecting her commitment to advocating for women's rights on a global scale.

Nicholas has developed a broad range of expertise in commercial law fields, including the sale and purchase of businesses, drafting of asset sale and shareholder agreements, and advising on guarantee and indemnity agreements. In the litigation sphere, Nicholas has gained valuable experience in VCAT and County Court proceedings, tenancy and co-owner disputes, intellectual property matters, and debt recovery actions.

Sherine is a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) graduate from La Trobe University and completed her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the Leo Cussen Centre for Law. She commenced her legal career in the area of wills and estates, and continues to focus her practise on estate planning, estate administration, and probate litigation.
Sherine supports executors and administrators in navigating the estate administration process, from obtaining either a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration to the final distribution of assets. Throughout the process, Sherine offers clear and practical guidance to help clients meet their obligations. Her clients are at ease knowing that they are being supported through a complex and often emotional process by someone who is committed to providing compassionate and reliable assistance.
In the area of probate litigation, Sherine has developed valuable experience dealing with contested estates and Part IV applications. Sherine takes a pragmatic and empathetic approach to these sensitive disputes, seeking to resolve conflicts through negotiation and mediation. She is skilled at managing difficult conversations and preserving relationships, offering practical solutions while maintaining professionalism and respect for all parties involved.
